Motorcycling Endurance Riders
Bikers Rights, Motorcyclists Rights, Long Distance Motorcycle Riding

For those of you who answered the recent calls-to-action intended to counter the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB's) "9/11 attack" on motorcyclists' rights...

...to quiet their illegal lobbying collusion with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)...

...and to remove from office NTSB Chairman Mark Rosenker, a.k.a. "The Creepster"...

...I have some very bad news:

Once again, the American Bikers' Rights Movement has been shot in the foot by its own hired guns. According to their press releases appended below, on 28 November 2007 Jeff Hennie (jeff@mrf.org) and James "Doc" Reichenbach II (abatefl@worldnet.att.net)--respectively the paid professional lobbyists for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and ABATE of Florida--not only attended but apparently requested what turned out to be a three-hour meeting with Rosenker and some of his NTSB cronies. The meeting was behind closed doors, so the only indications we have as to what transpired are the contents of the press releases.

"So," you may be thinking, "a couple of our lobbyists met with a few meddling Nannycrats, and issued a couple of press releases touting the meeting. What could be wrong with that?"

This meeting should never have happened. Just by scheduling and attending it, our lobbyists ingratiated Rosenker and cast an air of legitimacy on the out-of-bounds activity of his band of bureaucratic bunglers at the NTSB. Combine that with press release statements from Hennie calling Rosenker a "likeable gentleman" ... and those of Reichenbach indicating a willingness to submit to a quarterly NTSB "meeting of the minds" ... and what these two misguided mouthpieces have done is effectively undermine all of our recent and extensive efforts to keep yet another Nannycratic federal agency from making it their business to help motorcyclists crash safer.

Do you think the U.S. Senators and Congressmen we have been petitioning to clip the NTSB's financial wings and can Mark Rosenker are going to take us seriously when they see our hired guns kowtow so willingly to "The Creepster"? And with Hennie's press release reading like Rosenker's nomination for Motorcycle Safety Czar ... and Reichenbach's written like he already holds the post ... do you think Rosenker loses any sleep worrying about bikers seeking to take his job before he takes any more of our rights?

It does not matter what was said in this meeting, or by whom. The only political agenda our paid lobbyists advanced by attending it was Rosenker's.

MRF Meets with NTSB

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) along with the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) and ABATE of Florida, met with National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairman Mark Rosenker, Vice Chairman Robert Sumwalt, the Chairman's chief counsel, and some of the lead researchers at the NTSB headquarters in Washington DC. The productive summit spanned a full three hours.

The topics discussed included the NTSB's recent motorcycle safety recommendations and the future steps the NTSB will be taking with respect to motorcycle safety. Chairman Rosenker is a likeable gentlemen with endless stories of his 37 years in the Air Force and his service to President Bush as Director of the White House Medical Office. He also shared that he served as a representative of the Motorcycle Industry Council and talked of his part in designing the MSF logo, so it wasn't a surprise when he insisted on clearing his schedule until we, the motorcyclists, felt our voice was heard.

The fact remains that the NTSB stands behind their recommendations and supports them entirely. The MRF, NCOM and ABATE of Florida made it clear that we would continue to oppose any recommendations that call for personal protective equipment laws and crash mitigation. It was also made clear that motorcyclists would support any recommendation that calls for further crash avoidance, rider education, and motorist awareness campaigns. It was at that point in the meeting that Chairman Rosenker insisted that we not focus on the items that we disagree on, but rather on the things where we are, in his words, in "violent agreement" - things like crash avoidance and current motorcycle crash data.

"A dialogue was opened, and that's a good thing," said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the MRF. "The Chairman honestly wants to save lives, and he wants to be responsible when he attempts to do so. The MRF looks forward to a productive working relationship with the Chairman and Vice Chairman as they serve their terms of office. The Chairman made it clear that his door was always open to the motorcyclists of America." Chairman Rosenker, whose term ends New Years Eve 2010, pledged to work with the motorcycling community as the NTSB continues to improve our roadways.

The MRF would like to thank ABATE of Florida and NCOM for helping arrange the meeting. Special thanks to James "Doc" Reichenbach for making the trip to DC.

A meeting was arranged with the Chairman of the NTSB on November 28, 2007 by James D. ?Doc? Reichenbach II, State President of ABATE of Florida, Inc. and Chairman of the Board of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists. NCOM and ABATE invited the MRF?s lobbyist and Vice-President of Government Operations Jeff Hennie to attend the meeting also to discuss future and past developments in motorcycle safety.

Mark V. Rosenker, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, is a dedicated man who believes that helmets save lives. NTSB Vice Chairman Robert Sumwalt also attended the meeting. NCOM, ABATE and the MRF explained our views on this subject with extreme prejudice that helmets are not saving lives. Facts and figures were presented to the board for their review. The discrepancies between NHTSA?s statistics and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in Florida were pointed out. Other studies were also handed out by NCOM and ABATE of Florida to show that helmets and motorcyclists are not a public burden.

There is a meeting of the minds on safety every quarter in Washington, D.C. that NCOM and ABATE of Florida have now been invited to. I will recommend it to the boards of both organizations for their consideration.

The gist of the meeting is that the NTSB will look into the discrepancies that NHTSA has been putting out in their statistics and will report their findings to the motorcycling community. While there was agreement on certain issues, the helmet issue is very far apart and no headway was made on either point of view.

ABATE of Florida, Inc. and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists want to thank the MRF and Jeff Hennie for accepting our invitation to attend this meeting and work together on a united front.
